A profession with great responsibility

Since his first internship, Julius has thrown himself into the profession with enthusiasm and has been on several internships, where he has been allowed to delve into the many branches of work with laboratory animals. In January 2026, he will begin his apprenticeship at Aarhus University, where he will work with, among other things, nudibranchs, axolotls, turtles and snakes.

"I have learned that it takes a lot to be a laboratory animal caretaker. It's not just about feeding and mopping up – it's about reading the animals, understanding them, and creating a safe environment for them, even when they are involved in experiments. It requires patience, calm, and the ability to collaborate with both animals and people."

At Julius' upcoming apprenticeship, they work with basic scientific research, for example investigating whether special properties of animals can be used to develop new medicine. Julius is particularly fascinated by the abilities of animals – such as the axolotl's ability to regenerate lost limbs – and by how biology, ethics and care can be combined in practice.

For the sake of the animals

It is clear that Julius is passionate about his profession and approaches his work with great respect – both for the animals and for the responsibility that comes with it. He is aware that working with laboratory animals is sensitive for many.

"It's a divisive topic, and I also encounter prejudice. But many people don't even know how it really works. When I talk about it, I actually experience great interest and respect."

In the field of laboratory animals, everything takes place under strict ethical guidelines and in close collaboration with researchers and laboratories. There is no compromise on the welfare of the animals – quite the opposite.

"The most important question we ask ourselves in the workplace is: How are the animals doing? That's what we care about – all the time."
- Julius

A path for those with courage and curiosity

Julius has chosen a path that requires courage, curiosity and professionalism – and he thrives on it. He recommends that anyone considering zookeeper training be open-minded and give it a try:

"I had a clear idea that I wanted to work with animals – but I didn't know how many paths there really were. GF1 is a huge gift because you get to explore the entire field. I found my calling – and that's what I want to continue working on."

The dream is to either be employed at Aarhus University or at Biomedical when they open new facilities in connection with the Super Hospital in Aalborg.

"I know I'm making a difference. Even if it involves laboratory animals. I help ensure that the animals thrive and are treated with respect – and that means everything to me."
