Upgrading from category 2 to A2

New A2 refrigeration certificate replaces Category II, KMO certificate

New EU legislation on working with refrigerants means that the KMO category II certificate will be replaced by the new A2 refrigeration certificate. In future, you will need the A2 certificate to work with refrigeration and heat pump systems up to 1 kg of flammable and 3 kg of non-flammable refrigerants.

If you already have a KMO certificate, you must upgrade to an A2 refrigeration certificate via the course here.

If you have not worked with refrigeration systems and refrigerants for a long time, we recommend that you take the full A2 certificate.

NOTE! The deadline for upgrading to an A2 certificate is 12.3.2029.

Target group:

The course is aimed at skilled workers and similar target groups who, in their jobs, need an A2 certificate for handling refrigeration systems and heat pump systems with a maximum of 3 kg of refrigerant.

Course content:

Based on an existing Category II refrigeration certificate, you will learn to handle flammable refrigerants and obtain an A2 certificate to handle refrigerants used in stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment, with refrigerant charge up to 3 kg according to Regulation (EU) 2024/573, as well as Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2215.

The course concludes with the test for the statutory authorization required to work with flammable and non-flammable refrigerants (A2 refrigeration certificate) of up to 3 kg in the EU. In Denmark, the area is also regulated by the Danish Working Environment Authority's Executive Order on Occupational Health and Safety Education, which means that with the A2 certificate you are entitled to work legally with refrigeration systems and heat pumps in Denmark of up to 1 kg of group 1 refrigerant fillings and up to 3 kg of group 2 refrigerant fillings (and 3 kg regardless of refrigerant type in the rest of the EU).

Goal:

Based on an existing Category II refrigeration certificate, the participant can handle flammable refrigerants after completing the course and obtains an A2 certificate to handle refrigerants used in stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment, with refrigerant charge up to 3 kg according to Regulation (EU) 2024/573, as well as Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2215.

That is to say:

The participant has an understanding of the division of refrigerants into groups 1 and 2 as well as safety grouping.

The participant has knowledge of labeling, service equipment and personal protective equipment for working with flammable refrigerants.

The participant has an understanding of the thermodynamic properties of refrigerants, their explosion limits and hygienic limit values.

The participant can identify the amount and type of refrigerant such as azeotropic or zeotropic refrigerants and can perform leak tests for flammable refrigerants.

The course participant can safely fill and drain refrigerants on refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment containing a flammable refrigerant and can replace components, but not modify the system, according to standard practice on these.

The participant has knowledge of the legislation for the transport, storage and handling of flammable refrigerants and auxiliary substances.

Course certificate and certificate from the KMO scheme

An AMU course certificate is issued which is subsequently converted into an A2 refrigeration certificate from the Environmental Scheme.
