AART Architects wins competition for new connected campus at Techcollege
With the winning proposal, Samlingen, Techcollege is taking a significant step towards creating a new and coherent campus environment, which includes both a completely new so-called heart space and an extensive renovation of the school's existing buildings.
The winning proposal, Samlingen, was prepared by AART in collaboration with Nerd architects, ReVærk and Søren Jensen Consulting Engineering Firm. With a financial framework of 213 million kroner, AART will be in charge of design and total consultancy for the entire project, which will be realized with support from the AP Møller Foundation of 108 million kroner, among other things.
A heart space that builds bridges
The winning proposal merges the existing concrete building with a future wooden building, which will include a so-called heart room, which will be the school's central space. Students and staff can look forward to a modern teaching environment that invites interdisciplinary meetings between young people and adults at the more than 11 different vocational education programs and the technical high school HTX.
Anne Sofie Buur Okkels, partner and architect at AART, says:
"The Techcollege of the future will not just be a new chapter for an important educational institution – it will be a landmark for professional pride and sustainable education. With the transformation, we show that you don't have to tear down to build up. Through visible combinations of new and old, we create a campus where craftsmanship stands out clearly – and where students encounter architecture that shapes, inspires and invites community. For us, it is both a meaningful and socially relevant task to help shape the vocational education of the future, and we are proud to help shape a school that takes responsibility – both socially, environmentally and academically."
The working title of the proposal reflects that the existing Techcollege will be built on, and that the school's existing structure and concrete columns will become part of the new buildings.
"With the AP Møller Foundation's large donation and the winning proposal, we have taken a big step closer to the ambition of creating a motivating educational environment in a special class. Here, students can be activated and inspired to develop strong academic and social communities among the school's many different programs. The visual and architectural framework can help create pride in the students for being part of the Techcollege community," says Director of Techcollege, Søren Samuelsen.
The construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2030.
Facts
About the winning proposal
Four architectural firms have participated in the architectural competition.
A new, distinctive heart space will become the campus's lifeblood – a space with life, rhythm and identity – stretching through the building and connecting it all.
A new sports hall and a multi-purpose hall are being built, which will strengthen the community at the school and open it to the outside world.
The campus opens up to the surroundings and gives students easy access to the outdoor areas.
New path connections across the courtyards create coherence and will make it more natural to move between the buildings.
About the vision for Techcollege's campus environment
The ambition is to create a motivating educational environment of exceptional quality.
A grant of 108 million from the AP Møller and Wife Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation for General Purposes has made it possible for Techcollege to create an educational institution that is ready for the future.
The grant will go towards creating a unified campus that builds bridges between the different educational environments and promotes interdisciplinary encounters – both between youth and adult environments and across disciplines.
Techcollege itself invests the remaining amount in the project for the renovation of existing buildings, the construction of outdoor environments, a strengthened infrastructure and the establishment of new connections between existing buildings.
Techcollege is one of the country's largest vocational schools and offers EUD, EUX, HTX, courses and continuing education.
